Passengers travelling through Terminal 1 at Dubai International airport can now benefit from faster passport control with the installation of 20 new smart gates.
The new machines join ten that were installed last year in the departures area, bringing the total number of devices to 127 across the airport. Dubai airport says the gates can reduce average transaction times from minutes to under ten to 15 seconds.
The launch of the new machines coincides with the start of the UAE’s Month of Innovation, which runs until 28 February.
Smart gates do not require a dedicated card and can identify travellers by their passport, Emirates ID, e-gate card or a QR barcode generated via the GDFRA smartphone app. The machines can be used by UAE citizens and residents, GCC nationals and passport holders from a number of countries that are eligible to receive visas on arrival.
The airport says more than 5.5 million passengers used the gates in 2017 and that the new facilities have reduced queuing times.
