CATHAY PACIFIC last week checked in its first passengers taking a flight from Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok airport, at a Chinese mainland ferry pier. Shekou, in Shenzhen Provence on the Pearl River Delta, was the chosen gateway. Baggage was checked, a boarding pass issued and customs and immigration dealt with. Passengers were then technically airside and able to go straight to the departure gate as soon as they landed. There are 12 ferry services from Shekou to Hong Kong airport every day and Cathay plans to extend what it call its ”upstream check-in” services to Macau, Fuyong, Zhongshan and Dongguan.
