CARDIFF International Airport, backed by the Welsh Assembly, is pushing ahead with plans for desperately needed new road and rail links. In little more than a year the Vale of Glamorgan railway line will reopen, and with it the provision of a new station alongside the airport. A three-stage plan would deliver a much-improved road link from the M4. Airport director Jon Horne is adamant that these must go ahead: ”The importance of surface access links to airports cannot be over-emphasised. Quite simply, airports are transport interchanges, and to work effectively, they need good, efficient transport systems linked to them.” In 2003 Cardiff Airport experienced a 34% growth in throughput handling more than 1.9m passengers.
