THOMAS COOK AIRLINES has been contracted by tour operator Canadian Affair to operate a weekly service from Gatwick to Quebec City next summer using a Boeing 757-200. These will be the first ever direct services from the UK to Quebec, the only walled city in North America founded in 1608 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow cobbled streets and traditional squares are the site for its many carnivals and festivals. It is very much in the French speaking part of Canada and perhaps it would be diplomatic not to mention that in 1759 the British General Wolfe trounced the best that France could put out, effectively closing a chapter of North American history. From Manchester Canadian Affair will also introduce weekly flights to Montreal, Halifax and Ottawa. The operator already serves Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver from Manchester. On the web site you will see the outstanding hotel Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, in Qu”bec City, showing the lower town, as well as the Chateau itself. Qu”bec City is split into an upper and lower town, which are linked by the 'breakneck' stair cases, as well as by the funicular, which leaves from just in front of the Chateau Frontenac and leads down on to Petit Champlain, the oldest commercial street in North America, full of boutiques and restaurants!
