BRUSSELS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Zaventem, is to be privatised, the Australian Macquarie Group, including Macquarie Airports (MAp), making a winning bid and acquiring 70% of the airport equity for E735m (”512m). MAp has interests in Birmingham and Bristol airports in the UK as well as Sydney and Rome. MAp was selected by the Belgian government ahead of several rival bidders, including Amsterdam Schiphol, Vienna and Copenhagen airports, and construction groups Vinci of France and Spain”s Ferrovial. Ferrovial owns Belfast City Airport and joint owns Bristol Airport with MAp. Currently BRU moves 15.3m passengers, well down in the European pecking order, but its closeness to the city centre and main line railway station makes it an attractive proposition for the future.
