BA passengers between London and New York are to benefit as the fuel surcharge introduced last April is reduced by ”5 ($10). The airline is to lower the cost on 34 of its 75 long haul routes, those longer than nine hours non-stop remaining at the higher level. Charges on the airlines 87 regional and European services are to remain at the present ”8 ($16) level.
As things stand competing airlines Air France/KLM and Lufthansa say that they are monitoring the position but are not making any changes.
"Despite the recent drop in oil price, our fuel costs remain a real burden. It is our second-largest cost after employee costs," BA commercial director Robert Boyle said.
