BOEING has rolled out the last of 1,050 757s at a ceremony at its Renton (Washington), factory, a Shanghai Airlines 757-200. Known for its fuel efficiency and clean and quiet operation, the 757 entered production in 1981. Boeing delivered the first to launch customer Eastern Airlines on 22 December 1982. Three principal models were eventually produced ” the 757-200, long range 757-300, and the 757-200 freighter. The aircraft found much favour with the British charter companies and opened up the north Atlantic for twin-engine passenger operations. British Airways operated 28 Rolls-Royce powered machines from 1990 until deciding during Robert Ayling”s reign that a smaller aircraft (A320) was needed for its regional routes.
