BMI is not axing 3,000 jobs, the subject of brash headlines at the BBC and some of the Nationals. What the Donnington Park, East Midlands-based, airline is doing is slimming down but this is expected to be accomplished through normal attrition over the three or four years. BMI have also reiterated its support of a three runway Heathrow in the future but surprisingly would like the third runway, and it ancillary operations including the terminal, to be operated by a company other than BAA. BMI made a pre-tax loss of ”19.6m last year and expects to make another, smaller loss this year. The cost cutting exercise ” called "Project Blue Sky" ” will include the simplification of BMI's aircraft to an all-Airbus fleet, with the transfer of Boeing 737s to the airline's low cost subsidiary bmibaby. http://www.flybmi.com
