BERLIN TEMPELHOF AIRPORT is to close at the end of the summer season. In a terse statement SN Brussels Airlines, the single largest operator at the airport said it has learned, with much regret, and only through a press release, of THFs final demise. The airline points out that it had succeeded in providing a punctual, comfortable and reliable service from the heart of Europe to the heart of Berlin and has built a clear position as the leading carrier at Tempelhof. The airline goes on to say it fully supports Berlin in its long-term aim to build a new airport system to fulfil the future needs of the German capital and its region. ”However, it is premature to close Tempelhof before this system is in place and when there is clearly a sustainable demand for services to Tempelhof”. The premature closure of the airport leaves Berlin with a real problem, Tegel full and Schoenefeld (Brandenburg International) the new easyJet base, getting ready for a massive eight-year re-building programme. SN Brussels is consulting with its lawyers regarding a legal challenge to the closure.
