BERLIN looks like finally having a new state of the art international airport by 2011 following a federal court”s decision to allow the expansion of the current Schoenefeld into Brandenburg International. The decision means that Berlin”s famous city centre Tempelhof Airport is again under a closure cloud and that Tegel will certainly close when the new Brandenburg officially opens. Although the court said it saw no legal reason why the E2.5bn project to develop the former East Berlin airport should not proceed, it placed restrictions on night flights, including prohibiting landings after 2200 hours, and noise pollution. These limitations may yet cause problems. At least Schoenefeld does have an existing direct rail link into the city.
