BOEING it to stop building its (McDonnell Douglas) 717 series aircraft at Long Beach, south of Los Angeles. The aircraft started life as the Douglas DC9 and first flew on 25 February 1965. The 717 was the last large re-engined passenger aircraft in production, a line that can be traced from the Sud Aviation Caravelle and including the VC10, BAC 1-11 and Tristar, all with very quiet interiors and with much passenger appeal. The DC9 and its derivatives spawned 2,450 aircraft including 169 orders for the 717, some of which could now be lost.
