BALPA, the British Airline Pilots Association has come out emphatically against guns on aircraft at a time when airline security is a national issue. Jim McAuslan, general secretary, said: ”We believe this will do more harm than good.” The Department for Transport has refused to say whether marshals had begun work but in announcing its plans the government gave notice that British vigilance had increased. Thomas Cook Airlines, who operate charter flights to Florida, says it will refuse to accommodate Sky Marshals. Ireland is the latest European country to question the Sky Marshal idea.
