BRITISH AIRWAYS is to close its phone sales centres at Glasgow and London and concentrate this aspect of its marketing in Belfast, Newcastle and Manchester. The airline says that with Interline on-line bookings gaining more and more popularity demand for this type of service has fallen dramatically, down 34% in the last two years from 13m to 8.5m per year. Staff numbers over the same period have been reduced from 2,300 in 2001 to 1,400 today. The airline points out that it employs just 22 people in a telesales unit in Delhi, which deals only with calls from customers and travel agents in India.
