BRITISH AIRWAYS has agreed to purchase from United Airlines four slots at Heathrow (which are though to include the UA Newark service due to close at the end of the summer season) in a move to further consolidate its position at the world's busiest international airport. BA will now have 41% of the slots at Heathrow. With the winter programme now in place a further movement of long haul services from Gatwick is anticipated for next April. Under the current US-UK aviation agreement, trans-Atlantic flights at Heathrow are closed to all but two carriers from each country. Continental Airlines, whose London operation is limited to Gatwick, has come out strongly against the slot sale.
