AZAL, officially the state concern of civil aviation ”Azerbaijan Hava Yollari” has signed a contract with Airbus for three Airbus A319s and one Airbus Corporate Jetliner (ACJ). The Azerbaijan ACJ can seat some 55 passengers and will have a range of up to 9,000km ” enough to fly non-stop from Baku to all European capitals and most major cities in Asia and Africa. AZAL will receive its first A319 in mid-2005. All the aircraft will be powered by CFM 56-5 engines. The significance of the contract can be noted by the presence at the signing ceremony in Berlin of the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
