ATLANTA Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has passed Chicago O”Hare as the world”s busiest airport in terms of takeoffs and landings (movements). Atlanta managed 980,197 movements last year, while O”Hare was second with 972,246. In 2004 O”Hare had the most takeoffs and landings in 2004 with 992,471, compared with 964,793 at Atlanta. 2006 might well see one million aircraft movements through a single airport in one year. Passenger figures are yet to be released but here Atlanta has topped the ratings for several years with a throughput of over 83m passengers in 2004, Chicago 75m and close behind Heathrow at 67m. As a comparison Heathrow has a statutory limited maximum of (only) 480,000 movements the massive difference made up of general aviation (light aircraft) active and four working runways. Atlanta is now the world”s busiest whatever way you look at it!
