Amsterdam Schiphol airport has released CGI renderings of its new pier, which is set to open by the end of 2019.
The airport says the foundation for the pier has been completed and construction of the pier can now begin.
The new pier will feature five gates for narrow-body aircraft on the north side and three gates for wide-body planes on the south side, which can also be used to accommodate six narrow-body planes. Schiphol says two additional wide-body gates will be added at a later stage.
Schiphol claims sustainability is at the forefront of the new pier’s design, with 5,000sqm set to be installed on the 55,000sqm building. The pier will also use recycled rainwater to flush toilets, along with biomaterial, insulating glass, reusable plastic and marble rubblework tiles.
The airport is undergoing a wider expansion project, which includes a new terminal being built adjoining the existing departures and arrival hall. This is set to open in 2023 and will increase capacity by 14 million passengers.
