ALITALIA struggles on and complaints from competing airlines seem to make no difference. The Italian national carrier, which is also trying to join the Air France led Skyteam Alliance, appears to be well on the way with a life saving bridging loan, passed by Italy”s Upper House, which also needs approval by the EU. The eternal loss-making carrier says that it will re-structure, once again, but other airlines are sceptical that anything really positive will happen. For at least a decade there has been talk of a complete streamlining of European airlines but to date only Swiss Air has gone (its successor Swiss still not established as a viable operator), Sabena disappeared (completely re-organised and looking positive as SN Brussels) and Aer Lingus (a true success story under a vibrant management) still on the face of it the same as before but completely reinvigorated. Olympic woes have been hidden in recent months due to more pending Olympic (Games) problems.
