AIR NEW ZEALAND is to make significant changes to its international
network for the new airline season starting 29 October. Whilst it is
introducing a new service to London westbound via Hong Kong it is also
to suspend operations to Singapore. The twice-weekly Christchurch to
Los Angeles route also goes. Although it does not say so in as many
words clearly Auckland ” Singapore has been feeling the heat of
intense competition, ANZ saying that the airline is well advanced in
planning for the possibility of new international routes in North Asia
representing substantially greater growth prospects than the Singapore
hub which is already well served with international airline capacity.
The carrier debuts a non-stop 777 service to Shanghai three times a
week from 6 November with early bookings looking strong. ANZ is also
downsizing from a 747 to a 777 on the London route via LAX except for
the busy Christmas period.
