AIR MALTA is to establish new charter operations in the UK and Continental Europe following Malta's recent entry into the European Union. The airline has confirmed that it will launch services from key regional airports in the UK, including Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester, offering flights to a number of regions in Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal from late May. The flights will be operated by dedicated aircraft and crew based in the UK and Air Malta is in advanced talks with GATX Air to introduce two additional narrowbody aircraft to its fleet to support this expansion of its activities. Alongside the UK operation, Air Malta is also understood to be looking at establishing a base in Catania on the Italian island of Sicilly and potentially a third operation in mainland Europe. The airline already has some experience of the UK charter market, with its former partner AzzurraAir having based a number of aircraft in the UK over recent years, prior to its demise.
