AIR FOYLE is not an airline that often features in ABTN but it was probably at one time Britain”s largest cargo carrier, operating a fleet of BAe 146 freighters for TNT. Established in 1978 is also was the precursor of easyJet helping to launch that airline by way of an AoC. Today Air Foyle HeavyLift markets various cargo aircraft on behalf Antonov Airlines. Chairman and joint chief executive Chris Foyle has another claim to fame as chairman of Foyles bookshop in London”s Charing Cross Road, said to be the largest, and certainly the most famous, bookshop in the world. Since 1934 the Foyles Literary Luncheons have been an important social occasion. Last Friday a very distinguished audience at the Dorchester Hotel were treated to pure entertainment as former MP Gyles Brandreth promoted Philip and Elizabeth, Joanna Lumley broke silence with No Room for Secrets, and finally William Haigh on his much praised William Pitt the Younger. Michael Parkinson lead the guests response, Sebastian Coe rushed in and out, Lord Snowdon had a seat of honour and Dame Norma Major came in for much praise. And there were plenty of others.
