NEW YORK travellers who prefer the more leisurely arrival or departure by sea and are Carnival Corporation or Norwegian Cruise Line customers, will be using a new ship terminal from next April, Red Hook, Brooklyn. Already P & O”s Oriana has visited the facility (the Carnival Oriana according to the US publicists), which will relieve congestion at Piers 88 to 92, the traditional arrival point for New York. A really modern operation is planned, the good news being that access to JFK will be much easier (less than 15 miles - 30 minutes, with a host of alternatives), the bad news that Red Hook is the other side of the East River, opposite Governors Island, and a former cargo dock. The wonderful early morning cruise up the Hudson past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island looks like being a thing of the past, for some ships. Getting to and from the new pier from Manhattan will not be that easy either. It is either a tunnel or bridge. No longer the five-minute drive (on a good day) from Times Square.
