UK residents made 10 per cent fewer business trips abroad during the first three months of 2013 compared to the previous year.
According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, UK residents made 1.51 million business trips abroad from January to March – this compares to 1.68 million trips in the first quarter of 2012.
Conversely, the number of business trips to the UK made by overseas residents rose by 7 per cent to 1.82 million during the same period.
The figures are likely to have been distorted by the majority of the Easter holidays falling within March this year, compared to being entirely in April in 2012.
The number of overseas trips made by UK residents fell by 19 per cent during March to 550,000 compared to 680,000 in the same month last year.
But over the last 12 months there has only been a 1 per cent reduction in business trips abroad to 6.78 million.
This matches the 1 per cent reduction in overall travel abroad by UK residents which fell to 56.4 million for the last 12 months – holidays fell by 2 per cent year-on-year to 36.1 milllion.
