A massive earthquake off the east coast of Japan has sent a 10-metre high tidal wave crashing onto coastal areas.
The northern city of Sendai was worst hit by the quake, and its airport was submerged by the incoming seawater. The earthquake measured 8.9 on the Richter scale.
According to reports, Tokyo Narita airport has cancelled all flights today, but Tokyo Haneda has reopened after a short closure.
British Airways has cancelled its flights from London to Tokyo today, but has yet to make a decision about tomorrow's flights.
BA’s flights from Tokyo left this morning before the earthquake struck, but the airline has cancelled flights from both of Tokyo’s airports to London tomorrow.
All Nippon Airways and Virgin have also cancelled its flights this afternoon, but this evening’s flights currently look to be going ahead.
Finnair has also cancelled today's flights, and is offering passengers with tickets booked for the coming week the chance to postpone.
