British and US authorities have issued warnings about “possible threats” to their citizens in the Chinese capital Beijing over Christmas.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) said that the British embassy in China had “received information of possible threats against Westerners in the Sanlitun area of Beijing, on or around Christmas Day”.
But the FCO did not give any further details about the nature of the threat in Beijing. The Sanlitun district is known for its bars and international brand shops.
“British citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance. The UK Embassy has issued the same guidance to British government staff,” said the FCO in a statement.
The US embassy in Beijing has issued similar guidance to its citizens.
Police in Beijing have issued a yellow security alert over Christmas, which is the second lowest alert level out of four within the Chinese security system.
