The UK ranks just 13th in the world for having the most high-speed rail track, according to online booking platform Omio.
Currently there is just 70 miles of high-speed track in the UK between London and the Channel Tunnel, known as High Speed 1, which is used by Eurostar for its services from St Pancras to the continent.
Although another 143 miles of track are under construction as part of the High Speed 2 development – the first phase between London and Birmingham is due for completion in 2026.
China is way out in front for high-speed rail track with 19,000 miles – more than 10 times higher than second placed Japan which has 1,890 of track.
This gap will only become larger with another 4,500 miles of high-speed track currently under construction in China.
Spain is the top European country and third overall for high-speed track with just under 1,800 miles and another 562 miles being built.
France is in fourth place with 1,699 miles but currently does not have any more high-speed track under construction.
Turkey is set to see a huge expansion of its high-speed rail network with its current 369 miles due to rise by another 716 miles.
