St Pancras International station is to become the British first non-smoking mainline station when it opens in autumn next year.
This also includes public, delivery and back-office areas. Currently undergoing major renovation and modernisation in preparation for the switch of Eurostar services from Waterloo to St Pancras International in autumn 2007, the St Pancras/Kings Cross complex will also be the home of a high speed domestic commuter service from 2009.
By this time it is expected that as many as 50m passengers will be using the station every year, making it one of the UK”s busiest transport hubs. In the meantime Midland Mainline, who serve the existing St Pancras station, say that they too will go smoke-free in all areas from this November. Project director is Mike Luddy, well known in the airport industry, having held senior positions at Gatwick, Bristol and most recently Newcastle airport.
