SPAIN now has a high-speed railway with the partial opening of a new track between Madrid and Barcelona reducing travel time from seven hours to four hours 35 minutes. This first section of high-speed track runs from Madrid's Puerta de Atocha station through Zaragoza to Lleida/Lerida in Catalunya. The second section, from Lleida to Barcelona's Sants station, is expected to be completed in 2005, further reducing the travel time between Madrid and Barcelona to just 2 hours 30 minutes, very competitive with the present air services scheduled for 80 minutes. Currently there are six daily services. Travel times have also been cut between Madrid and Zaragoza ” from 3 hours to 1 hour 45 minutes ” and between Madrid and Lleida ” from 5 hours to 2 hours 40 minutes.
