GATWICK AIRPORT has expressed serious concerns over plans proposed by the Strategic Rail Authority for the Brighton main line service. (see ABTN 13 September) Speaking to the BAA newspaper Airwaves Bernard Ashley, manager transport strategy, said that the Gatwick Express should remain a dedicated, premium service for the airport”s passengers. ”The SRA”s proposal threatens to seriously degrade customer services at a time when we are trying to increase passengers using public transport to meet our public transport targets.” Any chances of the current concourse area at the station being upgraded are limited ABTN learns. The pre-stressed concrete nature of the structure somewhat curtails any intermediate development. It is all or nothing.
