Gatwick Express is the most delayed rail service in Britain, with more than 8,000 late journeys in the past six months.
Research by The Sunday Times showed that 33.9 per cent of direct services between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport were late by at least five minutes.
Around 2,600 trains – or 11 per cent – were more than 30 minutes late or cancelled.
The UK’s five worst routes are run by Gatwick Express operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), with the second worst service – London to Brighton – operating 34,352 trains (32.8%) at least five minutes late in the last six months.
Last week, GTR axed 350 services on its Southern network each day as part of an emergency timetable, introduced amid a continued shortage of staff and threat of industrial action from conductors.
The problems with Southern rail led to the resignation of rail minister Claire Perry last week, after saying that chaos on certain routes “feels like a failure”.
