ABTN is pleased to report success in the campaign it has helped to
lead against First Capital Connect, and its somewhat quickly
implemented scheme to restrict the used of cheap day return tickets in
the London catchment area. (see 12 June issue). With the help of
local MP Grant Schapps, Elaine Holt, managing director of First
Capital, and formerly of British Airways, has backed down for the
Welwyn services. The Luton Airport restrictions remain but she is now
being taken on by Ian Brown, managing director of London Rail, who is
concerned with her obliteration of the popular title, Thameslink. He
says in effect that unless First Capital improves its act he will not
support the company”s continuation as franchise holder for both
Thameslink and Great Northern.
