Leading business groups have called for the government not to abandon major infrastructure projects after the UK’s vote to leave the European Union.
Five major business organisations, including the British Chambers of Commerce, Confederation of Business Industry and Institute of Directors, have written to the government calling for “clear leadership” following the uncertainty caused by last month’s referendum.
The political chaos following the Brexit vote has already led to the decision on the expansion of either Heathrow or Gatwick airports to be pushed back to October.
The future of the HS2 rail project has also been questioned because of the impending change in the leadership of the Conservative government.
“Last week’s delay to a decision on airport expansion must not set the tone for other critical housing road, rail, energy and digital schemes, whether regional or national in scope,” said the business groups in their open letter.
“It is vital that these investments continue, given their outsized impact on jobs, regional growth, and prosperity.”
The letter also calls for an end to the uncertainty being faced by EU nationals who are currently living and working in the UK.
The groups are calling for the government to give a “clear and unequivocal reaffirmation of the long-term residence rights of EU citizens currently working in the UK”.
“Both because it is the fair thing to do, and because their skills are crucial to the success of our businesses, both now and into the future,” they added.
"Addressing these key issues would be a shot in the arm for business confidence, and send the right signals across the world. This may be a time for calm reflection, but it is not a time for inaction."
