Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has announced that the headquarters for the construction of HS2 will be based in Birmingham.
HS2 Ltd, the company heading up the project, said the decision to base the HQ in Birmingham will provide a “massive economic boost” to the city.
The project is expected to create up to 1,500 jobs with some roles moving from London to the midlands.
The HS2 project, which has come under fire from both political sides, would link London to Birmingham by 2026, with tracks to cities in the north of England including Leeds and Manchester, built by 2030.
“HS2 is a vital part of our long-term economic plan,” said McLoughlin. “By locating the new HS2 engineering HQ in Birmingham we are bringing skilled job opportunities into the area, spreading HS2’s benefits beyond those using the new rail line.”
He added: "It is great news that Birmingham City Council has created a company specifically to focus on the regeneration opportunities created by HS2. It will bring new investment and work into the city, helping secure the future prosperity of the region and the country."
