Japan's legislature has approved a 1,000-yen departure tax, effective Jan. 7, 2019, according to The Japan Times. The "sayonara tax," just under $10 in U.S. currency, applies both to visitors and to citizens leaving the country by air or sea and will be added to airfares for departures from Japan. The tax will not apply to visitors staying in Japan less than 24 hours.
