Corporate Travel Index - Europe

Published: 29 March 2022

Looking for the latest average hotel rates in cities across Europe? Information on typical taxi fares between the airport and city centre? What about average meal costs? And destination risk scores? We've got it covered!

BTN Europe is pleased to introduce the Corporate Travel Index calculator featuring data on all the above for the four quarters of 2021, enabling organisations to establish rate caps and per diems for their business travel programmes.

The calculator is powered by data partners Advito, Geosure, HRS and Prime Numbers, and covers nearly 50 key business destinations across Europe. Users can select from five hotel tiers and three meal types, as well as track quarter on quarter change throughout the year. See below for the full methodology.

To accompany the launch of the Corporate Travel Index calculator, the BTN team has also reported on rates movements across the world and specifically within Europe – and the outlook for all regions is rising costs (see features below). So it's time to get prepared as you shepherd your company's travel programme through the recovery.

Corporate Travel Index methodology

Hotel rates: Advito, HRS and Prime Numbers provide aggregated, anonymised hotel rates for BTN Europe's Corporate Travel Index. This data is updated on a quarterly basis.

Taxi rates: BTN Europe compiled taxi rate data, primarily using Rome2Rio and WelcomPickUps. BTN Europe updates taxi data annually.

Meal prices: With the support of Lynn Minnaert, academic chair and clinical associate professor in the New York University School of Professional Studies’ Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, the BTN Group partners with internationally based NYU students annually to compile meal data for the Corporate Travel Index. Students researched restaurants in December and January to gather meal prices sans taxes and gratuities. BTN Europe updates meal data annually.

Meal data: Breakfast is based on continental breakfast. For lunch and dinner in each city that has a population of 1.5 million or more, students surveyed 12 restaurants; in each smaller city, they called six. The students converted prices from local currency to Euros on 1 December 2021. Lunch is based on a sandwich, salad and non-alcoholic drink. Dinner is based on a raw or cooked fish entree, chicken or beef entrée, or pasta entree; salad; dessert or cheese tray; and a glass of wine.

Risk scores: GeoSure synthesises near real-time traveller safety data using a proprietary combination of Big Data predictive analytics, artificial intelligence/natural language processing and crowdsourced input. GeoSafeScores powered by GeoSure incorporate structured and unstructured data from sources like the United Nations, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, Interpol, The World Bank, FBI and the US State Department, as well as macro sources like inflation trends, education, income levels, political stability, trending health and disease data, neighborhood-level police presences, healthcare facility proliferation and infrastructure characteristics. BTN Europe updates risk data quarterly.
