STANSTED AIRPORT visitors might want to know that for the next couple of months the M11 will be subject to 24 hour, seven a week resurfacing between junctions six and seven, and eight and nine, and due allowance should be made for the 40 mph speed limits. The carriageways are just worn out. When competed, and with the introduction of the new sliproad to and from London, Stansted should be a much more car friendly place, although work on the A120 will continue for some time. As regards the 12 hour closure that took place a week back it was due to ”the wrong kind of snow”. As the airport points out, unlike typically the Nordic countries where for part of the year it is always below zero, the airport is not only open to the winds that blow across the somewhat flat East Anglia, but subject to temperature variations which can play havoc with the weather. The airport says it had over 30 snow clearance vehicles on duty and some 50 staff. Outside conditions were even worse and people were actually using the airport as a refuge. http://www.baa.co.uk
