Qantas plans to launch the first non-stop commercial service between Sydney and New York City in mid-2028, the airline announced on Wednesday (23 September).
Tickets between Sydney and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport are scheduled to go on sale in August 2027.
The new direct route, part of the carrier's ultra-long-haul Project Sunrise initiative, will cut more than three hours from the current one-stop service, according to Qantas, making it about 18 hours in length.
Flights will operate on Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft configured with 238 seats across four cabins.
The plane also will be fitted with an additional fuel tank that will allow the aircraft to fly up to 22 hours nonstop, according to the carrier. Qantas has 12 of the planes on order, with the first scheduled for delivery in April.
The first Project Sunrise route to launch, Sydney-London, is scheduled to begin service in October 2027.
