Lufthansa Airlines is launching a new luggage collection and check-in service in Frankfurt through a partnership with AirPortr.
The carrier will offer the service to passengers flying from Frankfurt Airport with baggage pick-up available from the greater Frankfurt, Mannheim, Heidelberg, Hanau, Aschaffenburg, Wiesbaden, Mainz, Darmstadt and Bensheim areas.
Once baggage is collected, travellers using the service will receive ‘real-time’ updates via a personalised tracking link and a digital baggage tag receipt, meaning “they only collect their luggage again at their destination,” the carrier said.
The new ‘premium’ service can be booked via the carrier’s website up to 36 hours prior to departure, with prices ranging from €25 to €35 for two bags to/from a central location.
"With the new pick-up and check-in service, we are offering our passengers another exclusive service that is unique in Germany,” added Heiko Reitz, chief customer officer at Lufthansa Airlines.
In a separate development, the wider Lufthansa Group on Wednesday (19 February) announced plans to acquire 100 per cent of ground services provider Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG at Munich airport.
The acquisition – subject to the granting of a license, a commercial agreement and the approval of relevant antitrust authorities – will provide operational stability and reliability for the group’s airlines in Munich, according to Lufthansa.
As part of the planned transaction, Lufthansa intends to retain all current Swissport Losch employees, while the company’s existing shareholders, Swissport Cargo Services Deutschland GmbH and Losch Airport Service München GmbH, will continue to provide advice on the development of self-handling.
