UNITED STATES Department of Commerce has released figures for the 2002 international visitors which shows declining arrivals of 41.9m compared to the 44.9m in 2001, a loss of 7%. The UK maintained its position as the top overseas market in 2002 (but does not include Canada and Mexico which it calls North American). The level of visitation was 3.8m, a decrease of 7% from the 4.1m in 2001. The second top market, Japan, also declined in 2002 to 3.6m visitors compared to 4.1m for 2001 (down 11%). German visitors registered 1.2m in 2002, 9% below the 1.3m in 2001. The fourth top overseas market, France, registered 734,260 visitors to the US in 2002, compared to 875,854 in 2001 (down 16%). http://tinet.ita.doc.gov
