Frankfurt airport saw a continued increase in passenger traffic in March as passenger numbers reached 2.9 million.
The German hub said its traffic was up by 218 per cent compared to March 2021 but was still down by 47 per cent on March 2019 passenger numbers.
Fraport Group, the airport’s operator, said travel demand was particularly strong to holiday destinations inside and outside Europe – reflecting the wider trend of the travel rebound being led primarily by leisure passengers.
During the first three months of 2022, Frankfurt catered for 7.3 million passengers – around half of 2019’s traffic level.
Fraport also operates Ljubljana airport in Slovenia as well as 14 regional airports in Greece and two airports in Bulgaria.
“Most of the Fraport Group airports achieved significant traffic gains in the reporting month, with some even recording growth rates of more than 100 per cent year-on-year – albeit compared to strongly reduced traffic levels in March 2021,” added the operator.
