Heathrow airport has temporarily suspended flights following a reported drone sighting.
The airport said on Twitter: “We are responding to a drone sighting at Heathrow and are working closely with the Met Police to prevent any threat to operational safety. As a precautionary measure, we have stopped departures while we investigate. We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The incident follows massive disruption experienced at Gatwick airport in the run-up to Christmas.
Both Heathrow and Gatwick recently reported they would be installing anti-drone technology to detect nearby devices and jam communications between them and their operators.
The government also announced today that it is giving police more power to deter major incidents such as the one at Gatwick that will allow them to land drones and require operators to produce documentation for the devices.
The Home Office is also testing anti-drone technology for use around “sensitive sites” such as airports and prisons.
Passengers due to fly from Heathrow tonight are currently advised to check with their carrier on the status of their flight.
