Derry Airport, which sits on the Northern Ireland side of the border with the Republic near the city of Londonderry, was closed Thursday night by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as a safety measure.
Ryanair has cancelled all flights until Monday at least (28th May) and British Airways has also rescheduled their services to operate through Belfast International. Dublin and Glasgow routes will be affected, but passengers should check-in at City of Derry Airport as normal for coach transfers to Belfast.
A spokesperson for City of Derry Airport indicated that discussions are continuing with the CAA to have the suspension reversed: "The City of Derry Airport is 100% committed to maintaining the highest safety standards. Following the public enquiry in April, the Airport Authority sought clarification from the CAA on a number of matters relating to existing variations with an expectation of continued operation.
”While this is an exceptional step by the CAA, the airport is confident that a position can be reached to ensure the airport is operational as soon as possible. The public will be advised immediately of any updates and it is understood airlines will provide further information on Friday."
The City of Derry Airport has operated under agreed variations with the CAA for the past number of years pending the commencement of safety works. Compliance with the existing safety variations has enabled the airport to manage over one million passengers over the past four years.
