Brussels Airlines has cancelled 68 per cent of its flights on 13 February due to a national strike affecting various stakeholders operating at Brussels airport.
Last week, the airline cancelled 28 flights out of the 222 planned and has already re-accommodated passengers to other services.
Now Brussels Airlines says it has made the decision to cancel a further 122 flights after further information revealed “the likely scale of the national strike”. The move impacts 11,288 passengers.
Belgian trade unions are striking in dispute of a wage agreement over the next two years, claiming the decision by the Central Council for Business limits wage rises to 0.8 per cent.
The cancellations affect a number of transatlantic services, as well as flights between Brussels and London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester. Passengers are being offered a choice to rebook their flight or request a refund.
Brussels Airlines says cancelling the flights now "will allow our guests to adapt their travel plans well in advance and hence minimise the level of disruption and discomfort generated by the national strike for them as much as possible".
