BMED, the former British Mediterranean Airways, may disappear at the end of the airline summer season in October but not without some well won glory
At last night's OAG Airline of the Year Awards Maria Sabbah, sales manager Lebanon, was recognised for her dedication and inspiring leadership during the aftermath of the air attacks on Beirut and its international airport in July 2006.
Maria, who received her award from BMED CEO, David Richardson (pictured right), helped hundreds of stranded passengers from all airlines to find their way home safely from the war-ravaged country.
BMED was recently purchased by bmi and whilst the airline”s name will disappear from the aviation scene its operations will certainly stay around. ”For the most part all the current BMED routes will continue,” noted bmi deputy chief executive Tim Bye, speaking last night at The Landmark hotel, host for the OAG awards.
”We will of course be tinkering about with slots and timings but essentially the destinations and frequencies will stay the same.” BMED as a British Airways franchise currently operates to 17 destinations in 16 countries and has no overlap with any existing bmi routes. Many of these destinations have restricted access to the market due to existing bi-lateral agreements.
