BAA has unveiled the detailed design for T5 at Heathrow, construction of which is much in evidence at the western end of the airport. The new terminal is due to open its doors to the travelling public in spring 2008 ” five years from now. Crowned by a distinctive single wave-form roof held up by a frame of 11 pairs of giant steel supports, the 45m high, 384m long main terminal building covers an area equivalent to 10 football pitches. The Richard Rogers Partnership is leading a multi-disciplinary design team on the prestigious ”3.7bn development. Throughout the design process, the focus has been on improving the passenger experience. The terminal building itself is characterised by open space, natural light, superb airfield views, simplified passenger circulation and shorter walking distances. There is a 400m by 170m single-span roof. On the airfield is sited a new 87m high air traffic control tower with a fully-glazed rotunda. http://www.baa.com
