Eurofly, the Milan-based airline that was once part of Alitalia, is to discontinue its Milan - New York JFK flights from 8 February. The airline operated a 48-seat all business class Airbus A319 on a daily service. The airline is also to cut three aircraft from its fleet and reduce staff by about one-fifth.
The airline competed against both Alitalia (to Kennedy), and Continental (to Newark). It was said that if the Milan-based carrier had flown from Linate, just six miles from the city centre, it would have had more of a chance. Malpensa, the alternative airport, is 30 miles to the west, and whilst the main international hub it has never been popular with many Milanese.
Eurofly continues to operate a fleet of Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft on both long haul and medium haul scheduled routes.
In a statement to the Milan stock exchange the company said that in spite of very good acceptance by the travelling public the route was two years away from profitability and a restructuring of the airline”s operations was necessary.
