IHG Hotels & Resorts is to open a new InterContinental property in the Romanian capital Bucharest in January 2023.
The opening will mark a swift return of the InterContinental brand to Romania after the management contract to manage its previous property in Bucharest ended in December 2021 and the hotel was renamed as the Grand Hotel Bucharest. IHG also has a Crowne Plaza property in the city.
The new InterContinental Athenee Palace Bucharest, which will feature 283 rooms, is located close to the Palace of the Parliament in the centre of the city and will be a 40-minute drive from Henri Coanda International airport.
Facilities will include an all-day dining restaurant with outside terrace, plus Cafe Athenee and The English Bar. Conference options include a ballroom with a stained-glass roof and another 13 meeting rooms of varying sizes.
Willemijn Geels, vice president, development, Europe, at IHG Hotels & Resorts, said: “InterContinental Athenee Palace Bucharest is the latest in a series of signings by IHG in prime destinations across Europe, including InterContinental Resort Crete and Kimpton St Honore Paris over the past 12 months.
“We are looking forward to a year of continued growth in 2022 and to strengthen our commitment in Romania in the years to come.”
