[Edited to correct details of testing regime]
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced at a meeting of federal state leaders that the country will insist on stricter rules for arrivals in the country from 11 January.
The new regulations mean that arrivals from high-risk areas will need to show a negative coronavirus test result taken less than 48 hours before arrival or on entry into the country. Those arriving will also need to go into quarantine for ten days but this can be shortened to five days in the event of a second test proving negative no sooner than five days after arrival.
The chancellor also announced that the country’s lockdown regulations would be extended until 31 January, with some rules tightened. One new measure means that residents in regions with more than 200 cases of Covid per 100,000 inhabitants in a seven-day period would not be able to go more than 15km from their place of residence without a valid reason.
The German government currently has a ban on all air passenger flights arriving from the UK to Germany which is due to expire today but this may be extended.
