There were an average of just over 16,000 European flights flown per day in the third week of January representing 63 per cent of the volume in the same period in 2019.
The latest Eurocontrol Comprehensive Assessment for the week from 20 to 26 January also revealed that the low-cost carrier segment was down 53 per cent compared to 2019 and the traditional segment was down 43 per cent. Business aviation was up 7 per cent on 2019 however.
Intra-European traffic was down 37 per cent while intercontinental traffic was down 38 per cent compared to the same period in 2019.
Ryanair topped the chart for the most flights in the week with 1,222 flights, a decrease of 36 per cent for the same week in 2019, while Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa came second and third but were also down by more than a third on 2019's figures.
Amsterdam was the busiest airport according to the Eurocontrol study followed by Paris CDG and Madrid Barajas.
