Emirates will require passengers departing Dubai to use a mobile boarding pass instead of a printed paper version from 15 May.
The carrier said the initiative will “significantly” reduce paper waste and improve efficiencies throughout the check in process.
Passengers checking in at Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 will receive their mobile boarding pass via email or SMS, while those who check in online can load their boarding pass into their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or retrieve their boarding pass via the carrier’s mobile app.
The QR code on the mobile boarding pass can be used at security and for boarding, as well as at the airport’s duty free outlets.
However, passengers flying to the US and those with connecting flights on other airlines will still require a physical boarding pass, as will passengers travelling with infants, unaccompanied minors and passengers requiring special assistance.
The option to print a boarding pass is also available by request at check-in counters.
